Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Job comes to the conclusion that life is brief and full of trouble. Job believes life is not fair due to sickness, loneliness, disappointment and death. As Job is still talking to his friends, they condemn him for causing his own suffering instead of comforting him during his rough times.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God’s solution to believers who live in an unfair world is to guarantee life with Him forever. Life is full of misery; however, no matter how good or bad your life is right now, you can rest assured that God has promised each and every one of us that we will be able to live in his presence eternally. Also, Job’s words reveal several ways to become a better comforter to those going through rough times, such as himself. The Bible points out that Job gives the advice of “1) don’t talk just for the sake of talking; 2) don’t sermonize by giving pat answers; 3) don’t accuse or criticize; 4) put yourself in the other person’s place; and 5) offer help and encouragement.” We can all learn to be better comforters to those who truly need someone to listen to them and to support them with whatever struggle they are going through. God wants us to be there for others, just as He is there for us!
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the promise that we will live with you eternally someday. We know that we may be going through life’s trials right now, but we look forward to the promises You give to us. Help us to learn how to comfort those in need around us and to be patient when we don’t completely understand their situations ourselves. We pray you would give us the strength to make it through life’s troubles and to learn from them as well as growing closer to you through them. We pray these things in Jesus’ name, amen.
