Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
God’s laws were given to the people in order to help them love Him with everything they had. Throughout Israel’s history, these laws had been misapplied. Jesus talked to the people about a new way to understand God’s law in order to bring the people back to its original purpose. The three categories of law in the Old Testament were ceremonial, civil, and moral law. In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were given in order to cleanse the people from their sins. Today, we can thank Jesus, for he gave himself as a sacrifice in order to cleanse us from our sins. Follow along in Matthew 5:17-20 and Romans 8:1-4, as we continue our “30-Day Walk with Jesus” series!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Jesus made it clear to the people that obeying God’s laws were more important than explaining them. It’s also much easier to study the Bible to learn God’s laws and tell others to obey them than to put the laws into practice ourselves. We must be sure to obey God and His ways for our lives; He certainly knows what is best for each and every one of us. Through God’s son Jesus, we are now free from the slavery of our sins. We must remember to praise and thank our Heavenly Father for this amazing gift. Without Jesus, none of us would have any hope at all. Without God, we are nothing.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Father, we know that we are sinners, and we ask for Your forgiveness. Please help us to forgive others who have hurt us and make things right with those we hurt. Please help us to love others, just like you love us. Help us to always be honest people, and let our attitudes and actions be pleasing to You, Father. Please help us to always follow Your ways for us, obeying and praising You through all circumstances in our lives. Please help us to love and obey You wholeheartedly. Please be with those who have rejected You, and help them to return to You, Father, before judgement. Please help us to draw near to You, and please protect us from giving in to the pressures of this fallen world. We want to live Godly lives. Please help us to study Your Word and Your laws for our lives, striving and doing our best to obey You and Your will for us. Please cure the world from sicknesses, diseases, and disabilities. When we face struggles in this life, Father, please help us to call upon You. We thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Thank You for the promise of one day living in eternity with You. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
