Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Elders were church officers who provided direction for other believers, and they were expected to be good examples for others. Peter described different characteristics of good leaders in the church; Peter instructed others to be humble and to serve one another, both the young and the old. Peter also tells us that we must remember God’s approval and recognition is more important than human praise. Follow along in 1 Peter 5:1-11, as we continue our “30-Day Walk with Jesus” series!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Peter described several characteristics of a good leader in 1 Peter, Chapter 5:2-5; and when we lead others, our leadership should be in line with these specific characteristics. The Bible points out that the older men should lead by example, and younger men should follow the leadership of the elderly. It is very important to be respectful of our elders, for being respectful toward others is how God intended us to be. God’s recognition is far more important than any other recognition we may receive in this life from others. It is God’s opinion that matters the most, and we must live for Him, doing what is pleasing in His eyes. God wants us to ask for forgiveness when we sin; He also wants us to give our burdens of this life to Him, for they are not ours to carry. God has promised His children a new life one day without pain and suffering. What a wonderful joy to look forward to!
