Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
As we continue our readings through 1 Chronicles, we read of the genealogies of Issachar, Benjamin, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, and Asher. We also read of the genealogy of Saul the Benjamite. 1 Chronicles 9 records the names of the exiles who returned from the Babylonian captivity. The priests and Levites were in charge of the Tabernacle and put a great deal of time and care into worship. 1 Chronicles 1-9 covers the Israelite history from creation to the exile in Babylon. Chapter 10 begins with Saul’s death and David becoming the king over all of the Israelites. Read about Saul’s reign as king in 1 Samuel. Follow along in 1 Chronicles 7-10!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Not every person in Judah was unfaithful, but the entire nation was carried into captivity. Everyone was affected by the sin of others. This example goes to show that even if we do not participate in a certain widespread wrongdoing, we will still be affected by those who do. We, as Christians, must speak out against the sins of the world. Azariah was in charge of the house of God. Whatever role that we have in church, just remember that it is important to God, and he appreciates our service. The priests and Levites were in charge of the Tabernacle and put a great deal of time and care into worship. In the busyness of life, it is very easy to rush into our one-hour worship service without taking the time to prepare ourselves for worship beforehand. Just as we prepare to meet someone for an interview or other special occasion, we should also prepare to meet our Heavenly Father and King in worship. Saul was very unfaithful to God and often disobeyed Him by ignoring His instructions. We must be actively pursing what is right in God’s eyes, following in His very ways for each of us.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please continue to guide and protect us on a daily basis, and help us to always do Your will. We pray for protection from harm and pain in this fallen world. Help us to avoid evil desires and actions that begin with us, and please guard our every thought and every action. Help us to flee from our temptations in life, for we know that the consequences of our sins can ruin not only our lives, but the lives of others, as well. We thank You for the unique talents and strengths that You give to each one of us. Please help us to use those giftings to honor and serve You. Please help us to prepare ourselves before we worship You so that we are able to completely focus on You instead of on the busyness of life. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving, Father. And thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
