Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The Philistines had learned that David had been anointed king over Israel, so they went out in search of him. David asked the Lord if he should attack the Philistines, and God told David that He would hand the Philistines over to him. David and his 30,000 men set out to take the Ark of God to Jerusalem to ensure God’s blessings on the entire nation. The Ark was only to be moved by the Levites, who were to carry it using the carrying poles. Uzzah touched the Ark because the oxen had stumbled, and the Lord struck him down. David may have been unaware of the specific instructions for carrying the Ark of the Covenant and was preparing to correct it. David gave a psalm of thanks to the Lord, and the people praised God, as well.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
David put God as first priority in life and served others around him according to God’s purposes. David knew that his greatness came from God, and God alone. To be great, in God’s eyes, means keeping a close relationship with God. Notice that David would always ask God whether or not he should fight his enemies, he followed instructions carefully, and he always gave God the glory. We must, also, always ask God first before moving forward with decisions. God had given David both honor and success. We must always remember that God has placed us where we are in life, and He has given us all we have in order to encourage other individuals around us and to give to those in need. We must always obey God and give Him praise for everything that He does and has done for each of us. Praising God will take our minds off of our problems and struggles in life and help us focus on God’s power and love instead.
