Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
In these chapters of the book of 2 Samuel, turmoil continues in David’s family. After David had traveled a short distance, Ziba, a steward of Mephibosheth, was waiting to meet him. Ziba was most likely hoping to receive a reward from David and made some comments about Mephibosheth. Shimei, a man from Saul’s family, began to curse David, but David and his men tolerated the abuse. Absalom slept with his father’s concubines, just as Nathan, the prophet, had predicted. War followed between Absalom and David’s fighting men. As Absalom was riding his mule, his head got caught in an oak tree. When Joab learned of the incident, he stabbed him with javelins, and Joab’s armor-bearers struck and killed him. David mourned the loss of his son Absalom. Follow along in 2 Samuel 16-18!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
David seemed to believe Ziba and his accusations against Mephibosheth without looking into it further. We must not be too quick to accept someone else’s condemnation of another, especially when the accuser may profit from the other person’s downfall. David and his followers tolerated the comments and curses from Shimei. We, too, can learn from this example. When we are unjustly criticized, it is best to try and maintain our composure and ignore it. God’s opinion is the only one that matters, and if we are in the right, God will vindicate us in the long run. We should never rush into action without thinking about it first. Those who commit evil actions often do not take the time to consider what they are about to do nor the consequences that may follow. Remember, God is always watching us. We must be good examples for those around us.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please continue to guide and protect us on a daily basis, and help us to always do Your will. We pray for protection from harm and pain in this fallen world. Help us to avoid evil desires and actions that begin with us, and please guard our every thought and every action. Help us to treat others with love and kindness. Please help us to flee from our temptations in this life, Father, always striving to please and honor You in our choices, for we know that the consequences of our sins can ruin not only our lives, but the lives of others, as well. Help us to flee from rebellion, giving all of our worries and fears up to You. Help us to strive to please You, Father, rather than the public eye. Help us draw near to You. We thank You for the unique talents and strengths that You give to each one of us. Please help us to utilize the opportunities that You put in front of us, for Your ways are better than our own. We know that You have a greater purpose for our lives. Help us to be patient and wait upon Your timing, Father. Please help us to use those giftings to honor and serve You. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving, Father. And thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Help us to show compassion toward the less deserving, as well. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
