Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
1 Chronicles 3-5 describe the genealogies of the nation of Israel and of God’s work in the world. This long genealogy not only lists names, but it also gives us insights into some of the individuals. Jabez, from the clan of Judah, acknowledged God as the very center of his life (1 Chronicles 4). Jabez prayed for God to protect him from harm and pain in the world. Othniel was Israel’s first judge. Reuben’s sin was recorded for all of the future generations to see. Follow along in 1 Chronicles 3-5!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Today’s scriptures demonstrate that God is interested not only in nations but also in each individual person. There have been many people who have lived since the beginning and Adam, and God knows and remembers each and every one of them. Each of us are more than just a name or a number to God; He knows and loves us more than we could ever imagine. As mentioned before, Jabez put God at the very center of his life. We must ask God to be the center and to take control of our lives, as well, including our careers, family time, and our hobbies, always obeying Him in our daily responsibilities. Just like Jabez, we can pray specifically to be protected from harm and pain in this fallen world. We must also avoid evil desires and actions that start with ourselves, as well. We can ask God to guard both our thoughts and our actions. Reuben’s sin stripped away his rights, privileges, and ruined his family. Before we give in to our temptations in life, we must consider the consequences that sin can cause in our lives and even in the lives of others. Be sure to read through the genealogies of Israel covered in these next few chapters.
