Scripture: Psalm 73/77-78. Click here to view full scripture.
Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
These three psalms speak about the sovereignty of our Heavenly Father, God’s hand in history, His faithfulness, and God’s covenant with David. Our worship to God should be continual. Asaph was the leader of David’s temple choirs. In Psalm 73, Asaph explains that he could not understand the justice in allowing evil people to thrive while the righteous people went through hardships until he entered God’s sanctuary. Psalm 77 encourages us to continue through the hard times in life by remembering all that God has done for us. In Psalm 78, Asaph retells the history of the Israelites from the time of slavery in Egypt to David’s reign as king.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Yes, there are evil people in this world. Sometimes it may seem like the wicked people of this world are the ones who prosper. Don’t ever wish that you could trade places with the evil people of the world and their wealth, for one day we will have eternal wealth with our God in Heaven. And that reward, eternity with God, is the greatest gift that we could ever receive. We must base our happiness and hope on God, not on earthly riches. We must gain our confidence, strength, courage, and security in God, for one day we will be raised to life to serve Him forever. Memories of God’s miracles and faithfulness helped the Israelites through their hard times. God is our helper, and He will guide us through the battles in our lives; and in that thought, we can be comforted. When we pray to God, He shifts our focus off of ourselves and right on Him. We must help teach the generations to come to obey God and to set their hope on Him. We must pass on the history of God’s work to the next generation.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Thank You for the Book of Psalms, and the lessons that come from each beautiful song. Please help us to put our relationship with You above any and all earthly riches, for we know that You are the only one who can completely satisfy us. Help us to remain faithful to You through all of our trials and struggles in this life, and please keep our hearts clean. Help us to always obey You, trust You, and follow the path that You have paved for our lives. Help us to draw near to You in our times of trouble and on a daily basis. Help us to commit our ways to You and to trust You for the outcome. Father, please give us a fresh touch of Your love. Please pour out Your love on us, our friends and families, our churches, and on our spiritual paths with You. We give our enemies up to You, and we ask for Your protection. Help us never to doubt or resent You when an answer to prayer is not on our timing. Please help us to fulfill the responsibilities that You have for us. We know that You know what is best for us, and we trust You. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
