Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
King Rehoboam was Solomon’s son who lost the chance to rule over the Israelites peacefully because he did not listen to the advice of Solomon’s more experienced and wiser counselors. Rather, he followed the advice of his peers, and the people revolted, dividing the nation. Ahijah, a prophet, had once predicted that the nation would be split in two, and Jeroboam would rule over the northern section. Even though this material was covered in 1 Kings, yesterday’s scriptures, 2 Chronicles retells the story of Israel’s rebellion against Rehoboam and the dividing of the nation. Follow along in 2 Chronicles 10-12!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Advice is helpful when it is consistent with God’s standards. We can seek advice from those who are more experienced. As these scriptures point out, we must follow God at all cost(s). We must always do what He wants us to do. The Israelite people became so corrupt and immoral; their lives started to crumble apart, and they lost everything. When God is not present in our lives, everything else will become useless. We must have God in our lives, for He is our only hope. God likes unity, and only He knows the future. Sometimes God will allow division in order to fulfill His greater plan. It is during the tough times in life that push us closer to God; however, we must guard our faith when everything in the world seems to go smoothly, because it is during the easy times that we may feel self-sufficient and less dependent upon God. When the nation’s leaders asked for forgiveness, God showed them mercy…just like he shows us mercy. When we are struggling, feeling alone and broken, we can confess our sins to God, and He will show us His loving kindness and mercy. He is a very loving and forgiving Father.
