Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
David was quite the musician and would play his harp for Saul, and he also wrote more of the books of Psalms than anyone else in the Bible. 2 Samuel 22 is a royal hymn of thanksgiving to the Lord, for God had helped David overcome all of his enemies and rescued him in the midst of his troubles. 2 Samuel 23 is a chapter with the last words of David. It also describes David’s mighty men who helped him in battle. Psalm 57 is another psalm written by David and carries the theme of God’s faithful help and love in our times of trouble. Follow along in 2 Samuel 22-23 and Psalm 57!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God helped David through his many times of trouble, just like God helps us during our struggles. David knew that God made him clean from all of his failures and wrongs. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, we are also made clean. God replaces our sin with His purity, and our sin is washed away when we ask for forgiveness. We must be sure to thank God for His many gracious gifts, counting our blessings. Tell God daily how much you appreciate all that He has done and is doing in your life. God is there for us in our times of trouble. When we are going through trials in this life, God can quiet our hearts and give us confidence in Him. When our enemies attack, the best thing to do is stay calm and praise God. God hears our prayers; we should not be afraid to talk to Him.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please continue to guide and protect us on a daily basis, and help us to always do Your will. We pray for protection from harm and pain in this fallen world. Help us to avoid evil desires and actions that begin with us, and please guard our every thought and every action. Help us to treat others with love and kindness. Please help us to flee from our temptations in this life, Father, always striving to please and honor You in our choices, for we know that the consequences of our sins can ruin not only our lives, but the lives of others, as well. Help us to flee from rebellion, giving all of our worries and fears up to You. Help us to strive to please You, Father, rather than the public eye. Help us draw near to You. We thank You for the unique talents and strengths that You give to each one of us. Please help us to utilize the opportunities that You put in front of us, for Your ways are better than our own. We know that You have a greater purpose for our lives. Help us to be patient and wait upon Your timing, Father. Please help us to use those giftings to honor and serve You. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving, Father. And thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Help us to show compassion toward the less deserving, as well. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
