Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
A proverb is described in the Bible as “a short, wise, easy-to-learn saying that calls a person to action.” The Book of Proverbs focuses on the Lord and describes how we can live in a close relationship with Him daily. Solomon asked God for wisdom, and God granted Him him with wisdom. These next few chapters of Proverbs continue to speak about wisdom for all people, practical wisdom for godly living at each stage in our lives. Proverbs also tells us how to succeed in God’s eyes – living wisely according to God’s standards, creating success and a good reputation. However, several verses also point out what causes failures and a poor reputation. Follow along in Proverbs 19-21!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The beginning of Proverbs 19 points out that we should not rush into the unknown. We must be sure that we understand what we are getting ourselves in to and where we are heading before we take the first step. Plus, we must make sure that God approves. The instructions we are told to obey are found in His Word. Self-destruction takes over when we choose to disobey Him. God created each and every one of us, and He certainly values and loves us. There is quite a difference between an individual who learns from criticism and a person who refuses to accept correction. When someone criticizes us, we should listen closely and see what we can learn from it. God provides for us, but He also wants us to be responsible and plan carefully, anticipating future needs and preparing for them. We are all sinners, so we need ongoing cleansing daily. We should thank God for all that He does for us and for providing mercy and forgiveness when we ask for it. We should always trust God and His timing of things for us, for He knows what He is doing. We must be diligent servants to God, being His hands and feet to those around the world who are in need. Just imagine what this world would be like with more love and kindness!
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Thank You for the Book of Proverbs, and the lessons of wisdom that come from each chapter. Father, we know that we are sinners, and we ask for Your forgiveness. Please help us to love and obey You wholeheartedly. Please help us to love our enemies and to forgive those who have hurt us, as well. Please be with those who have rejected You, and help them to return to You, Father, before judgement. Help us to treat others with kindness, and help us to show the same traits to others as You do, following Your example. Help us to trust in Your care and provision in each of our lives. Even though we do not always get what we want in life, we know that You know what is best for us. Please help us to draw near to You, and please protect us from giving in to the pressures of this fallen world. We want to live Godly lives. When we face struggles in this life, Father, please help us to call upon You. Help us also to be more compassionate toward others who are struggling in this evil world, as well. Help us to be Your hands and feet in this world, and guide us in the right paths for our lives. Help us to trust in Your timing for our lives, and help us not to grow impatient. We thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Thank You for the promise of one day living in eternity with You. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
