Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
David was beginning to make arrangements for the building of the temple. Although God told David that he was not to build the temple, he could make the preparations and help out that way. When David was old, he made his son Solomon king of the Israelites, just as God had instructed. The priests and Levites had different duties in and around the temple, and they came from the tribe of Levi. The priests performed the sacrifices, and the Levites were set apart to help the priests. 1 Chronicles 24 breaks down the divisions of the priests, and 1 Chronicles 25 explains the 24 groups of musicians that were to match the Levites.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
These chapters in 1 Chronicles point out how organization is essential for smooth and effective service. The worship in the temple could not have taken place without the priests and Levites working together. Even though their responsibilities were different, they were equally important in God’s plan. No matter what duties or place of service we have in church, we are all important to the healthy functioning of the whole congregation. God wants all of His people to participate in worshiping Him. God does appreciate whatever gifts and talents we have to offer in service to Him. After all, He is the one who gives us special gifts and talents, so why not use them to serve the Lord?
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please continue to guide and protect us on a daily basis, and help us to always do Your will. We pray for protection from harm and pain in this fallen world. Help us to avoid evil desires and actions that begin with us, and please guard our every thought and every action. Please help us to put our faith and trust in Your strength instead of our own. Help us to treat others with love and kindness. Please help us to flee from our temptations in this life, Father, always striving to please and honor You in our choices, for we know that the consequences of our sins can ruin not only our lives, but the lives of others, as well. Help us to flee from rebellion, giving all of our worries and fears up to You. Help us to strive to please You, Father, rather than the public eye. Help us draw near to You. We thank You for the unique talents and strengths that You give to each one of us. Please help us to utilize the opportunities that You put in front of us, for Your ways are better than our own. We know that You have a greater purpose for our lives. Help us to be patient and wait upon Your timing, Father. Please help us to use those giftings to honor and serve You. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving, Father. And thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Help us to show compassion toward the less deserving, as well. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
