Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Paul wrote a letter to the Colossians from prison; he wanted to combat the false teachings that had made their way into the Colossian church. Paul greeted the people in his letter, included a note of thanksgiving, and a prayer for spiritual wisdom and strength for them. Paul also explained to the people that God has a plan for each of them, and the world’s teachings are empty when compared with God’s will. Follow along as we read through these short Books of Colossians and Philemon, learning about Paul’s teachings about what Christ has done, thanksgiving and prayer, the supremacy of Jesus, Paul’s labor for the church, freedom from human regulations through life with Jesus, and rules to follow for holy living and having Christian households!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Just as Paul explained, God has a plan for each of His children. We are to love God and to love others. When we love our Heavenly Father, our loves translates to others, including friends, family, other believers, strangers, enemies, etc. God wants us to constantly be in communication with Him through prayer; He is listening. He also wants us to take every opportunity we are given to share the Good News with others. There are still so many people in this world who need to feel the love of Christ and learn about God’s precious gift of salvation. God will provide for us; in Him, we have everything that we could ever need! When we find the world getting us down, we must remember our hope in eternal paradise with our Heavenly Father one day, just as He has promised! This life is not the end! Just as we ask others to pray for us, we must pray for our other brothers and sisters in Christ. God is waiting with open arms for us to ask for forgiveness, turning our lives back toward Him. He loves us more than we could ever imagine! We can learn daily by centering ourselves on God, studying His Word, staying humble, pressing toward wisdom, and praying for understanding. We all need to be changed from the inside out. Change can be slow and can take time; however, our lives can change drastically if we trust God to change us. One day, each and every one of us will stand before God. We must live today as though Jesus is returning at any second! God’s ways for us are the best ways. God wants us to be there for others, just as He is there for us. God can turn the most hopeless relationships into the best of friendships!
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Thank You for the Books of Colossians and Philemon, and the lessons that come from each chapter. Father, we know that we are sinners, and we ask for Your forgiveness. Please help us to always follow Your ways for us, obeying and praising You through all circumstances in our lives. Please help us to love and obey You wholeheartedly. Please help us to love our enemies and to forgive those who have hurt us, as well. Please be with those who have rejected You, and help them to return to You, Father, before judgement. Help us to treat others with kindness, and help us to show the same traits to others as You do, following Your example. Help us to trust in Your care and provision in each of our lives. Even though we do not always get what we want in life, we know that You know what is best for us. Please help us to draw near to You, and please protect us from giving in to the pressures of this fallen world. We want to live Godly lives. When we face struggles in this life, Father, please help us to call upon You. Help us also to be more compassionate toward others who are struggling in this evil world, as well. Help us to be Your hands and feet in this world, and guide us in the right paths for our lives. Help us to trust in Your timing for our lives, and help us not to grow impatient. We thank You for Your son Jesus who died to free us from the slavery of our sins. Thank You for the unique gifts and talents that You give to each one of us; help us to work in unity with others to accomplish Your plan. Thank You for the promise of one day living in eternity with You. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
