Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The Israelites were to fully obey God and to carefully follow all of His commands. Deuteronomy, Chapter 28, explains the blessings God would give His people if they fully obeyed Him and the curses that would follow if they disobeyed God and His ways for them. After Moses had reviewed God’s laws with the Israelites, he called for commitment from them. He wanted the people to honor the contract that they had previously made with the Lord. In Moses’ third address to the Israelites, he reminded them of all that God had done for them along their journey, and a renewal of the covenant was made.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
One of the punishments for those people who rejected God was the fact that they would go crazy from seeing all the tragedies happening around them. Much of this world’s evil comes as a result of people’s failure to acknowledge and obey God. However, in spite of all the sickness of the world, we need to remember who has the ultimate control. Jesus will one day be back to make it all right. The Israelites were quick to complain and did not notice how God had taken care of them along their journey. Just like them, we sometimes do not notice all of the ways that God takes care of us. Be sure to thank God for all that He does for you on a daily basis. Just as the Israelites were to keep their part of the covenant and to love God with all of their heart, soul, and strength, we must do the same. Without God, we are nothing. When we do something wrong, we must confess it to God and to others right away. By doing so, we can prevent evil seeds from growing out of control. We must obey God in everything that we do.
