Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Enemies were still in the land of Canaan because the Israelites had failed to obey God and drive them out of the promised land. The Israelites had accepted pagan gods and intermarried with the women of the surrounding nations. In these next few chapters of the Book of Judges, we read about God sending judges to help the people of Israel. The first judge was Othniel, followed by Ehud, then Deborah. With each of these judges comes a story, and God gives Israel the victory. The Israelites would then fall back into idolatry. Follow along in Judges 3-5 for the specifics and stories of each judge helping the Israelites!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God allowed the enemies to remain in the promised land in order to test the Israelites of their faith and obedience. God sometimes leaves obstacles in our lives, as well – difficult people, tough situations, struggles, battles – to allow us to develop our faith and obedience to Him. Just like the Israelites, we also want to befriend those who do not know God. However, the Israelites fell into the ways of the people of the surrounding nations and became involved in pagan worship. We must accept others without adopting their patterns of behavior. We should always ask for the Holy Spirit’s help as we come up against our daily struggles, as well as life’s major battles. We are all sinners, imperfect humans. However, the first step toward removing the sin from our lives is realizing the seriousness of it. Ask God for help in the midst of your struggles and temptations, and He will help. We should always keep God as the center of our lives, for He has the power that we need in order to fight the destroyers of our lives.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please help us to always attempt to meet life’s challenges with Your help and not on our own. Help us to learn to completely rely upon You, Father. Help us to always obey You, driving out the sins in our lives rather than tolerating them. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit on a daily basis. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving God. Please protect us all and keep us safe. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
