Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Once again, the Israelites did wrong in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years, He gave the Midianites control over them. The Israelites cried out to God, and the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and told him that he was going to deliver Israel and defeat the Midianites. God told Gideon to tear down the altar of the people’s pagan god and to build a proper kind of alter to the Lord. When the people found out what Gideon did, they wanted to stone him. Gideon asked God to show him miracles so that he knew without a doubt that God’s promise to save Israel was certain. Gideon was afraid to fight the Midianites, but God allowed Gideon to overhear a conversation at the enemy’s camp that would give him courage. Because of his obedience to God, Gideon and his army simply had to watch as the Midianites retreated, and not one man had to draw their sword.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Once again, the Israelites struggled severely before turning back to God. We should always look to God for help each day; turning to God should not be a last resort. Call on God first in every situation, and trust Him with all of your heart. When problems arise in our lives, the first place to look is within ourselves. We then should confess the sin that caused the issue to God and ask for His guidance. Gideon was obedient to God and followed His instructions. God will give us the tools and strength that we need when He calls us to do something. We must not make excuses, but, instead, continue to do what God tells us to do. Gideon had risked his life by following God’s instructions and tearing down the altar of the pagan god. When God instructs us to accomplish something for Him, we must do it. By following His commands, we may be criticized, even by the very people who should support us the most. When looking for more of God’s guidance, we can study the Bible. We should put our complete trust and confidence in God, and not in ourselves, when we face life’s challenges.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please help us to look to You, Father, in every circumstance, every battle that we are going through in this life. We trust You with all of our hearts and want to follow your ways for us. We know that You will give us the tools and the strength to accomplish what You call us to do. Help us to always attempt to meet life’s challenges with Your help and not on our own. Help us to learn to completely rely upon You, Father. Help us to always obey You, driving out the sins in our lives rather than tolerating them. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit on a daily basis. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving God. Please protect us all and keep us safe. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
