Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
A man by the name of Tola rose to save Israel after the time of Abimelech, followed by Jair, and then Jephthah. Each time the Israelites would fail and then call out to God, He would send another judge to help lead them in the right direction. Jephthah was a Gileadite who was chased out of the country by his half brothers, because he was the son of another woman. The elders of Gilead wanted Jephthah to be their leader so they could fight the Ammonites. Jephthah then made a promise to God that if He would deliver them from the Ammonites, Jephthah would give to the Lord as a burnt offering whatever came out of his house door to greet him when he returned home from battle…which happened to be his daughter. Jephlah led the Israelites for six years, and then he died. After the death of Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon and Abdon led the Israelites.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Once again, the Israelites struggled severely before turning back to God. Do you use God as your last resort? So much unnecessary suffering takes place when we call on God after all of our other resources are used up. We must always turn to God first, for He is the one who has all the resources that we would ever need. God never fails to rescue us. Jephthah suffered rejection as a result of someone else’s decision, not his own. Despite his rejection, God used him to lead the Israelites. When we are facing unfair rejection in life, we must not become discouraged and blame others. Just remember how God used Jephthah; He is able to use us even when we feel rejected by people. When we feel left out in life, we must avoid insulting others, being jealous, and seeking revenge. Give all of your worries, feelings, and fears to God, always asking Him for help and guidance.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please help us always to call on You first when we are in distress instead of using You as a last resort. Please take control over our lives, Father, and guide us on a daily basis, for You know what is best. We know that You never fail to rescue us in our times of need. Help us not to grow discouraged or blame others when we are facing unfair rejection in life. We know that Your opinion is the only one that matters. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit on a daily basis. Thank You for being such a loving and forgiving God. Please protect us all and keep us safe, and be with the people who are suffering from natural disasters, heartaches, tragedies, etc., around the world. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
