Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Samson was seduced by a Philistine woman named Delilah. Samson finally told her the secret to his strength, and she betrayed his secret to the Philistines, who then captured him and took him away in chains to Gaza. Samson was blinded and had no strength left in him. Samson prayed to God to strengthen him one last time, and Samson brought down the pillars of the Philistine temple, killing the rulers, the people, and himself.
Judges, Chapter 17, describes a man named Micah who had taken silver from his mother. He returned the silver to her, and she then had a silversmith make a carved image and an idol. A young Levite who had been looking for a place to stay came to Micah’s home. Micah invited him to live with him and be his priest. Troops from the tribe of Dan persuaded Micah’s priest to come with them, and they killed the citizens of Laish. The Danites worshiped the image and idol they took from Micah.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Delilah kept asking Samson for the secret of his strength, and he finally gave her the answer. This led Samson down the path of disobedience to God. We should never allow anyone to talk us into doing wrong. We can ask God to help us distinguish between deception and truth. Even though Samson had a past, God still loved him and listened to his prayer of confession and repentance before he died. No matter how long someone has been away from God, He is still ready to listen and to restore them into a right relationship. We can always turn to God and ask for forgiveness.
Micah and his mother disobeyed God by following their own desires instead of doing what God wanted them to do. The Israelites had no king, so everyone did as they pleased. God has given us standards in life, and we should not conform to society’s low standards. We must draw closer to God and to His Word to know what is really right and to have the strength to do it. We can expose the values and practices that we have adopted from the world and apply God’s truth to them and then begin to uproot them.
