Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Some men from the tribe of Benjamin had committed a horrific crime (described in Judges 19), and the Israelites prepared for war against the Benjamites. The Israelites united themselves against the city and inquired of God, asking which of the fighting men should go first to fight the tribe of Benjamin. The Lord told them the tribe of Judah should go first. War broke out between Israel and the tribe of Benjamin.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The Israelites had forgotten God, and their unity as a nation disintegrated. They began to set their standards below God’s and became no better than the wicked people around them. When we leave God out of our lives and He is no longer leading our lives, we lose our purpose and fall back into our old ways. During the time of the judges, the Israelites had trouble because everyone became their own authority and acted before letting God lead them. It didn’t seem to work out for them. This happens in our society, too. Individuals and groups in this fallen world have made themselves the final authorities without reference to God. We must constantly seek God’s direction, going into battle each day and submitting our plans, desires, and motives to God, praying for our nation, as well.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please help us distinguish between deception and the truth in this world. Help us not to set our own standards in life but to allow You to lead us in the right direction. Take complete control of our lives, Father. Help us not to conform to the standards of this fallen world, but to draw closer to You and Your Word so that we know what is right in Your eyes. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
