Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
In the beginning of the Book of Ruth, Naomi is left widowed from her husband Elimelech. Her two sons, Mahlon and Kilion, also passed away. She encouraged her two daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, to remain in their homeland and to remarry. Ruth refused and remained loyal to Naomi, so the two women returned to Bethlehem as widows. Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side named Boaz. Ruth went to work in the field, and Boaz was very kind to the women. Ruth married Boaz, and she then had a baby boy named Obed. Follow along with the story of Ruth in this short chapter of the Bible! Great story!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Naomi had a selfless attitude and had encouraged her daughters-in-law to remain in their homeland and remarry. When we act selflessly and consider the needs of others, we encourage others around us to follow our examples. Ruth belonged to a race often despised by the Israelites; however, she was blessed because of her faithfulness to God. Everyone is important to God, regardless of gender, race, or nationality, so we must not let that discourage us. Naomi had experienced tremendous hardships and started to grow bitter. When we face bitter times in our lives, God wants us to talk to Him, to pray, and to not overlook the love and strength that He provides in our current relationships. Ruth went out to the fields and started working immediately, and God provided for her. Are you waiting for God to provide a certain need? He just may be waiting for you to take the first step to demonstrate how important your need is. We must always have faith that God is directing our paths in life to fulfill His purpose. Just as God was with Naomi and Ruth in their hard times in life, He will be with us, too, each step of the way in our rough times.
