Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
When David and Jonathan, Saul’s son, met, they instantly became friends. Saul grows jealous of David and his accomplishments and attempts to kill him by hurling his spear at him. Even after Saul’s attempts to kill David, David continued to protect and comfort Saul, for David was a very humble person. David married Saul’s daughter, Michal. Jonathan and David make a covenant, and David fled to Samuel at Ramah, for Saul was still trying to kill him. Psalm 11 is a chapter that describes David’s trust in the Lord in the midst of his troubles. Psalm 59 is a chapter that speaks about God’s constant love being a place of safety in this fallen world.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Saul’s appreciation for David soon turned into a strong jealousy. Jealousy is an evil thing, and we must not allow jealousy to have a foothold in our lives. When Saul tried to kill David, David still continued to love Saul. People turn their backs on others all the time in this wicked world. Although it is unbelievably difficult to do, it is better to befriend someone and ask God for the strength to continue loving them instead of striking back or trying to avoid them. God is our rock in the midst of our troubles. We can draw near to Him, trust Him, and talk to Him in this fallen world. Our God is near to us, and He certainly loves us, more than we could ever imagine.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Please help us to always put You as our first priority in life and not to push You aside. We will trust in Your provision(s) for us, Father, for we know that You know exactly where You want each of us. Help us to always obey You, trust You, and follow the path that You have paved for our lives. Help us to flee from jealousy and to continue loving others even when they have harmed us, Father. Help us to draw near to You in our times of trouble and on a daily basis. Help us to commit our ways to You and to trust You for the outcome. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
