Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
These psalms from David include a plea for justice, written when David was being persecuted by Saul, a prayer to God for help against those who try to inflict injury on us, a call for God to overcome our enemies, and a psalm of David, describing his desire for God’s presence in his life, provision, and protection from his enemies. Follow along in Psalm 17, Psalm 35, Psalm 54, and Psalm 63!
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God protects us. God also helps and guides us through painful circumstances, not only by helping us escape them. We will always find true happiness when we put our relationship with our Heavenly Father above any and all earthly riches. God’s love and doing His will in our lives is what will truly make us happy. When our enemies are unjust, slander us, and treat us badly, we can talk to God about our feelings instead of seeking revenge ourselves. Our God is always just, and we must turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39), as He has told us to do, giving our enemies to God. God hears every prayer, but He does not always answer immediately. Don’t let that be a reason to doubt or resent God, but rather serve as an opportunity to deepen your faith in God. God is our helper and is there for us, even in our times of hurt and betrayal. God is the only one who can satisfy us fully. Our desire should be for God, for He can do anything.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples and stories that You have placed in Your Word for us to learn from. Thank You for the Book of Psalms, and the lessons that come from each one. Please help us to put our relationship with You above any and all earthly riches, for we know that You are the only one who can completely satisfy us. Help us to remain faithful to You through all of our trials and struggles in this life. Help us to always obey You, trust You, and follow the path that You have paved for our lives. Help us to draw near to You in our times of trouble and on a daily basis. Help us to commit our ways to You and to trust You for the outcome. Help us to flee from revenge, always treating others – even our enemies – in God-honoring ways. We give our enemies up to You, and we ask for Your protection. Help us never to doubt or resent You when an answer to prayer is not on our timing. We know that You know what is best for us, and we trust You. Please forgive us for the many sins that we commit, and help us to forgive others. Please guide and protect us, our friends, families, pets, and our brothers and sisters around the world who are suffering. We love You and thank You for everything. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
