Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
News about the Israelites’ victories became widespread, and the Gibeonites deceived the Israelites. Other kings in the area also began to unite against the Israelites. God had specifically told the Israelites not to make any treaties with any of the people of Canaan. Joshua had agreed to protect the Gibeonites, for the Gibeonites had lied about who they were and where they were from. Joshua made this mistake, but he had to keep his oath to them. Enemies had united to attack Gibeon, and the Israelites helped them. Joshua lead his people and defeated the five Amorite armies in a single battle because he put his complete trust in God to give the Israelites the victory. God had commanded Joshua to completely rid the land of sin. Joshua and his Israelite army had attacked the southern and northern kings, the Anakites, and any other areas of the land that God instructed them to.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Just as Joshua and the Israelites experienced opposition, we can expect opposition as we obey God’s commands. We must completely rely on God and communicate daily with Him in order to guard against these pressures in life. Joshua and the leaders forgot to ask God about the peace treaty and made the decision to protect the Gibeonites on their own. When a new situation arises in our lives, don’t forget to ask God for guidance and wisdom before rushing into a decision. With God’s help, the Israelites won the battle against five Amorite armies. Joshua trusted God and told his men never to be afraid because God would always give them the victory over their enemies. God has helped us in the past and will also help us with our present and future needs in life. God alone is the one who delivers us from our enemies and struggles in life. To Him be the glory! Be sure to thank God for everything that He has done, is doing, and will continue to do for us. We, as humans, tend to grow impatient with God when situations in life aren’t moving quickly enough. When we look back, we can see that God never stopped working. Trust God, for He knows how to take care of us and meet all of our needs.
