Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The Israelites started to complain that they didn’t have meat to eat; Moses also complained that the burden of the people was just too much. The Lord provided quail for the people to eat, but the anger of the Lord burned, and He sent a plague down upon the people. The Israelites then traveled from Kibroth Hattaavah to Hazeroth. Miriam and Aaron began to speak about Moses because he had a Cushite wife. The Lord called Miriam, Aaron and Moses to the Tent of Meeting, where He would speak with them. The anger of the Lord burned against Miriam and Aaron for speaking against Moses, and Miriam became ill with leprosy. Moses asked God to heal her, but Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days. The Israelites left Hazeroth and went to the Desert of Paran. The Lord then told Moses to send some men to explore the land of Canaan, the land God had promised them, and the men reported back to Moses just what they had discovered.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
We, as humans, tend to complain to one another quite often about our problems in life, but we need to learn that we can take our problems to God, the One who can do something about them. The Israelites were not focused on what God had done for them but what He hadn’t done for them. Dissatisfaction set in. Are we grateful for the things that God has given us and provided for us – God’s gift of life, food, health, work, family and friends? Or are we focused on what we would like to have? We can always talk to God and ask Him for what we need. However, just like the Israelites, if we approach God with a bad or sinful attitude, it may not turn out just as we had hoped and may become costly. Depending completely on God is the key. When we start to rely on our own understanding, we are forgetting to see God’s assessment of a situation. We can start by remembering what God already has done for us and His present power and ask for His help and guidance. Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses’ character. When we are in a disagreement, we should first stop and ask ourselves if we are arguing over the key issue or if we are just on the path to attacking someone’s character. We can ask God to help us identify the real issue and deal with it. Moses was told by God to send some men out to explore the land of Canaan. The men discovered some things that made them intimidated and fearful. When we face tough decisions in life, we can’t let the negatives cause us to lose sight of the positives. God will guide us. We just have to trust Him.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for the examples that are written in the Bible for us to follow. We are complainers, Father. Please help us to learn to take our complaints and give them up to You, for we know that You will help us with our problems. Help us to focus on the wonderful things that You have done and the things that You have given to us in life instead of the things that we would like to have. We are so thankful for everything You have done for us. Help us to approach You and ask for things with humble hearts and not sinful attitudes. When we come up against intimidating and scary situations in life, please help us to think of the positives and to rely completely on You. Please protect us and guide us in life. We know that You have a direct path for each of our lives, and sometimes we grow impatient. Please help us to draw near to You and wait for You to guide us. Help us to move with You in every circumstance that we encounter in life. Please forgive us for our sins, and help us to treat others how we want to be treated. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
