Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
Balak guided Balaam to several different places to try to entice him to curse the Israelites. Each time this happened, Balaam would speak the words that the Lord had given to him. Balaam spoke the truth, even though his motives were not correct. In speaking the truth, Balaam lost the reward from Balak that was promised if he followed through with cursing the Israelites. Balaam returned home. While the Israelites were staying in Shittim, the men began to participate in sexual immorality with the Moabite women, who had invited them to worship their false gods. The Israelites began to worship the Baal of Peor, and God grew very angry. God told Moses to tell Israel’s judges to put to death the men who had joined in with the worshiping of Baal of Peor. An Israelite man brought a Midianite woman into the tent right in front of Moses and the people. Phinehas, son of Eleazar, took a spear and followed them into the tent where he killed them. This stopped the plague against the Israelites, which had already killed 24,000 people.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
In life, we must learn to face the source of our problems, instead of trying to escape them. Moving to escape our problems will only make solving them more difficult. Although Balaam’s motives were incorrect, in blessing Israel, he did what God had told him to do and acted with integrity. Staying true to God’s Word may cost us in the short term of things, but when we choose God over money and material things, we will one day acquire eternity with Him, wealth beyond measure. Just think about that. We can’t even begin to imagine what we will one day get to experience with our Heavenly Father.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for this beautiful day. We pray for protection over our loved ones and ourselves. Please forgive us for our sins, and help us to forgive others. Thank You, Father, for sending Your one and only son to die for us. Help us to have complete faith, trust, and belief in You and Your love for us. Please help us not to be blinded by the desires of life, but rather look forward to the long-term benefits of following You. Please help us to always face the source of our problems instead of trying to run away and escape the issues. Help us to stay true to Your Word no matter what, for we look forward to eternity with You. Help us to treat others with respect and love. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
