Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
After the plague of the Israelites was over, the Lord told Moses and Eleazar to take a census of the whole Israelite community by families. The total number of men from the Israelites totaled 601,730. Zelophehad had died in the desert and had no sons, only daughters – Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached Moses at the Tent of Meeting and asked for their father’s (Zelophehad’s) property that he had left behind. At their request, it was given to them, and the Lord made this a legal requirement for the Israelites – that if a man died and had no sons, the inheritance would be given to his daughters, etc. The Lord told Moses to appoint Joshua to be commissioned as the new leader for the Israelites, and Moses did as the Lord commanded.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The whole Israelite community moved from one land to another, lost a whole adult population, and still managed to maintain its spiritual direction. God was working in their lives. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like God is working dramatic miracles in our lives, but God often works in quiet ways, guiding us in the direction of His purpose that He has for us. Moses asked God to appoint a great leader who would care for the Israelites’ needs and could also lead them in battle. Great leaders are goal-oriented and love people. Moses helped Joshua then ease into his new position. If we are ever in a leadership position, to make transitions smoother, it would be a great idea to help train others to continue the duties should we ever have to leave a position. Be a helpful person.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for this beautiful day. Please help us to be patient when we don’t feel that You are working dramatic miracles in our lives, for we know that You are working behind the scenes, guiding us in the right direction. Please let Your love shine through us, and help us to care for others. Help us to lend our helping hands out to others, just like You do for us. Please forgive us for the sins that we commit on a daily basis, for we are sinners. Thank You for being such a loving God. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
