Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
A group of Midianites were at the promised land when the Israelites had arrived. The Lord told Moses to take vengeance on the Midianites because they had been responsible for enticing the Israelites to worship Baal. Instead of killing the Midianite women, the Israelites held them captive. The Israelites were to give a portion of the war spoils to God and to the Levites. Not one of the Israelite soldiers had been lost in battle, and the people thanked God for their protection. The Reubenites and Gadites wanted to live east of the Jordan River, and Moses assumed they were being selfish and were trying to avoid helping the others fight for the land across the river. The tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh promised to keep working and helping people until all of the land was conquered.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God commanded the Israelites to destroy the Midianites, and the Israelites took the women as captives rather than hurting them. When we have sin in our lives, we must deal with it completely, not just partially. If God points out our sin or we feel convicted of a certain sin, we want to remove it quickly from our lives. The Israelites were to give a portion of their war spoils to God. The money we earn in life is not ours alone. Everything that we own comes from our Heavenly Father, and we should return a portion to Him and to those in need. Not one soldier had been lost in the battle with the Midianites, and the Israelites thanked God for His protection. God is constantly protecting us and delivering us from bad situations, and we should always be quick to thank Him for everything. When people help us out, we should always be quick to return the help and finish the whole job, even if it does not benefit us directly.
