Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
God instructed Moses to record the Israelites’ excursions, and Moses made a record of both their spiritual progress and geographic progress. The Lord told Moses to speak to the Israelites and to tell them that when they cross the Jordan and into the land of Canaan, they were to drive out all of the inhabitants of the land, destroying their false idols and possessions. God also told Moses to tell the Israelites that the land allotted to them as an inheritance would have certain boundaries. In God’s plan for establishing the land, He explained what the Israelites needed to do, communicated it clearly to Moses, and assigned certain people to the different portions of the land.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The Israelites moving into the promised land from God was a symbol of them leaving their old lives. Just like this example of the Israelites moving into Canaan, the promised land, we, too, can be encouraged to throw away our old ways of living and move into a new way of living in complete obedience to God. We must drive out the sinful thoughts and actions in our lives and make room for the new us. God told the Israelites to destroy the sinful people living in Canaan, but the Israelites were uncertain. We should always obey God without question, even though we do not fully understand His overall purpose(s). The promised land was given by God to the Israelites as an inheritance, and He greatly blessed them. God always gives us way more than we could even ask or think about. God gave clear instructions to Moses and to the Israelites for establishing the land. When we, as humans, have a particular job to do, we must figure out what needs to be done, have clear communication and give clear instructions, and put people in charge of each part. This prevents any type of miscommunication, confusion, or conflicts.
