Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
In the beginning of the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses summarized the Israelites’ 40-year journey and reviewed with the them God’s previous care for the people. It was a big burden for Moses to lead the Israelites by himself, but Moses had shared the leadership with others. Moses reflected back to the appointment of the leaders, when the spies were sent out to the land of Canaan, when the Israelites rebelled against God, their wanderings in the desert, and defeating Sihon King of Heshbon.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The Israelites spent forty years on a journey that should have lasted less than a couple weeks. It was the condition of their hearts that had hindered them. We may face many difficulties in life, but we need to remember that God is preparing us for a lifetime of service and devotion to Him. When God tells us to do something, we must obey. When we choose to follow God regardless of the difficulties we face, we are demonstrating our complete faith and trust in Him. We should always focus on the positives while trusting God to overcome the negatives. Moses had pointed out some great qualities of leaders, including wisdom, understanding, and respect – which are some great qualities in leaders today, as well. Pray to God for guidance each day. He will go before us in our daily battles, preparing the way for us and overcoming the barriers. God will always lead us in the direction that He wants us to go. Trust Him.
