Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The Israelites were forbidden from eating certain foods, described in Deuteronomy, Chapter 14. Also, the Bible makes the purpose of tithing more clear. God wanted the Israelites to help the poor around them when they arrived in the promised land. The Israelites were also given specific instructions for freeing slaves, firstborn animals, and the celebrations of the Passover, Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. The people were also given laws for ruling the nation.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Although we, in the present life, no longer have to follow these laws about food, etc., we can still learn from the examples placed in the Bible that holiness is to be carried into all parts of our lives. We must put our best efforts into being the people that God intended us to be, constantly following His ways for us. The Bible makes the purpose of tithing very clear. It teaches us to put God first in our lives. Giving our best and first share of our income shows what we value the most, our Heavenly Father. God also wants us to help people who are in need. We can share God’s goodness with others, and let His light shine through us while helping those who aren’t as fortunate. What could you do to help someone in need? The Israelites were to let their servants go after six years, being fair and supplying them with plenty of food to take care of them until their needs could be met by some other means. We can compare this to the way we treat employees and others around us. We must treat employees, coworkers, friends, family, etc., with respect and fairness.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for this beautiful fall weather and harvest. Please let Your love shine through us, and help us to care for and to love others. Please help us to place You at the top of our lives, always putting both our best efforts and tithes forward. Help us to give to those in need and to treat the people around us with love, respect and fairness. Please forgive us for the sins that we commit on a daily basis, for we are sinners. Thank You for being such a loving God. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
