Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
More laws were given to the Israelites relating to worshiping other gods, law courts, selecting a king for the people, offerings for the priests and Levites, detestable practices, prophets, cities of refuge, witnesses, and going to war. God had specific rules and practices that he wanted His people to follow. Check out Deuteronomy, Chapters 17-20, to review these laws given to the Israelites in complete detail.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Our giving shows our real priorities in life. When we give our best and first portions to God, it shows that He is at the center of our lives; but, when we give Him the leftovers of our money, time, and talents, we are showing something completely different. The priests and Levites served similar functions as our pastors today. They were to teach others about God, set a good example for others, care for the sanctuary and its workers, and distribute the offerings given. As we look at our own home churches, we should think of some ways to honor the leaders that God has given us. The Israelites were curious about the occult practices of the Canaanite religions, and today people are still curious about things such as horoscopes, fortune-telling, witchcraft, etc. Satan is a liar, so information offered by him is likely to be completely untrue or distorted. The Lord did not want the Israelites to be afraid when they were going to war against their enemies. We are sometimes faced with overwhelming oppositions ourselves, whether at the workplace, home, school, etc. God reminded the Israelites that He was always with them and had already saved them from potential dangers. We, also, can feel secure when we know that God can and will help us overcome the most difficult situations in our lives.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for this beautiful fall weather. Please help us to give our best offerings – money, time, and talents – to You, showing others that You come first in our lives. Help us to love one another and to help those in need. Thank You for the leaders that You place in our churches to guide Your people; help us to honor them and to show our appreciation. We know, Father, that You are there for us no matter what we are facing. Help us to feel secure knowing that You can and will help us overcome the most difficult situations in our lives. Thank You for everything that You do for us, each and every day. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
