Scripture: Deuteronomy 21-23. Click here to view full scripture.
Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
In Deuteronomy, Chapter 21, when a crime was committed and the criminal got away, the whole community was held responsible. God gave the Israelites instructions and laws regarding relationships, including atonement for unsolved murder, marrying a captive woman, the right of the firstborn, various laws regarding marriage violations, exclusion from the assembly, uncleanness in the camp, and other miscellaneous laws. Follow along in Deuteronomy, Chapters 21-23, for complete details of each law God had given His people regarding these relationships.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The Bible describes what would happen, in the Old Testament, to disobedient and rebellious children. Thankfully these punishments are no longer used today. The Bible does not excuse physical, verbal, or emotional abuse of children today. The Israelites were to care for and return lost animals and possessions to their owners. We, too, should follow this rule by protecting and returning the property of others. We need to be honest people; and, by following this kind gesture, we can protect ourselves from being envious and greedy. God has a purpose in making each of us unique, male and female. As you will discover in Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, God included many laws about sexual sins. He included these guidelines because sexual sins will confuse and tear down respect, trust, and credibility that is essential for strong marriages and secure children in the household. We must be good role models for those around us and stay clear of temptation in these areas, protecting ourselves and others around us. However, we are all sinners, and we should not hold on to past experiences, always asking for forgiveness and moving forward. Our God is a loving God.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, We thank You for the examples that You have placed in the Bible for us to learn from. Please help us to love and respect the people around us, always treating others how You would. Help us to be honest people, always protecting and returning the property of others. Please help us to flee from our temptations, Lord. We are sinners, and we ask for Your forgiveness always. Help us to be good examples for others. We are so thankful for everything that You do for us, and we give all of our worries and fears from the day up to You. We know that You love us and will guide us. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
