Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The relationship laws that God had given His people continue in Deuteronomy, Chapter 24. Also, God wanted His people to treat the poor and needy with justice instead of looking down upon them as incompetent and lazy. The Israelites were instructed to leave some of their harvest in the fields so that travelers and the less fortunate could gather it. Deuteronomy, Chapter 25, points out some important principles about discipline. The Israelites are reminded about giving their firstfruits and tithes and following the Lord’s commands. After the Israelites had crossed the Jordan and into the land that God had given to them, they were to build an altar of stones to give offerings to the Lord. Moses had reviewed the laws with the new generation of people.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God stresses the importance of caring for the less fortunate in His Word. We all face specific needs at one time or another in life. God wants us to treat one another fairly and to do our part to help meet one another’s needs. The Bible reveals some important principles about discipline, even though the verses in Deuteronomy seem irrelevant in today’s society. Whether we are responsible for the punishment of a child, student, or an employee, we all can learn something from these principles of discipline. By letting the punishment follow quickly after the offense, letting the degree of punishment reflect the seriousness of the offense, and not overdoing the punishment, the discipline can make its point and preserve the dignity of the offender. God wanted His people to remember all that He had done for them. What has God done for you? Who can you share your spiritual journey with, to encourage yourself and to encourage and inspire others? Moses reviewed God’s laws with the new generation of people. When we decide to believe in God, we must also follow His ways. We need to make sure that others can tell that we are a part of God’s family.

Heavenly Father, Thank You for this day. Please help us to follow Your instructions and to give and care for the less fortunate in this world instead of passing judgment upon them. We all need Your guidance, love, and support. When we are in a situation where we have to give discipline, please help us to ask for Your guidance and patience, always being fair to others. Thank You for everything that You do and have done for us. Help us to reflect and to share our stories with others to encourage, inspire, and share Your love with others. Please help us to follow Your ways for us always, letting others see that we are a part of Your family. Please forgive us for our sins, and please guide us in the right paths in life. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
