Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
The Israelites had received all the laws and regulations recorded in Leviticus and had been camped near Mount Sinai for more than a year. The Israelites were ready to move on and receive their land that God had promised them. God told Moses to take census of the whole Israelite community to see who was eligible to take part in battle. The total number of eligible men who were able to serve in the military equaled 603,550. The Levites were appointed to be in charge of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. The Lord told Moses and Aaron that the Israelites were to camp, with a little distance, around the Tent of Meeting. The Israelites did everything that God had commanded Moses.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
The men had to be counted to determine the Israelites’ military strength before entering the promised land. It is important for us to take inventory of our resources as well whenever we are at crossroads, such as inventory of our possessions, relationships, spiritual condition, time, goals, etc. The Israelites had generally been obedient to God in the early stages of their journey. They became more difficult, grumbling and complaining, and disobeyed as they began to travel across the desert. When problems erupted, it got more difficult for Moses to manage. When we obey God, we can accomplish a lot; however, we accomplish very little when we disobey God. God knows what is best for us, so we must obey Him in all that we do.

Please help us to stay close with You, always being obedient, where we will accomplish much more in life. Help us to take the time to count our blessings from You and reflect on all the wonderful things that You do for each one of us. Please help us to evaluate and take inventory of our relationships with others, our spiritual conditions, time spent with You, goals, etc., always looking to please You in all that we do. Please guide us and protect us and our loved ones through this day and always. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
