Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
God included restitution as part of his law for Israel. If a person was robbed, the guilty person was required to restore the loss to their victim and also pay an additional interest penalty. God gave instructions to Moses to relay to the Israelites that if a man suspected his wife of committing adultery, the man should take his wife to the priest, and the priest would perform a specific test for adultery. God instituted the Nazirite vow for people who wanted to devote time specifically to serving Him and to raise up a group of leaders devoted completely to Him.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
When we have wronged others, we should go out of our way to look for ways to set matters right and leave the victim better off than when we harmed them in the first place. When we are wronged, we should still seek restoration instead of revenge, always asking God for guidance. Today, pastors are able to help restore marriages by counseling couples who have lost faith in one another. We must guard our hearts and our marriages, staying away from behavior that can build suspicion and weaken trust, in order to strengthen the bond and maintain the trust with our spouses. The Lord told Moses how Aaron and his sons were to bless the Israelites. When we ask God to bless others or ourselves, we are asking Him to protect us, to be pleased with us, to be gracious, to give His approval, and to give us peace. The blessings we offer to others will help the one receiving the blessing, demonstrate love, encourage those around us and show others how much we care.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your son Jesus to die for us so that we may be forgiven and washed clean from our sins. When we have wronged others, please help us not only to apologize and ask for forgiveness, but to go out of our way to set matters above and beyond right. Help us to seek restoration instead of revenge when we are harmed. Please keep our marriages strong, Father. Help us to guard our hearts and our marriages. We ask for Your blessings upon not only ourselves but upon others. Help us to demonstrate love and to encourage others. We pray for Your protection and guidance. We love You and thank You. – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
