After running a couple last-minute errands today, I decided to make a brief stop through the McDonald’s drive-thru to take home for lunch. Both myself and the driver in the black car ahead of me seemed to be in a hurry as we turned a sharp right into the McDonald’s entrance – I’m assuming we were both trying to avoid the noon-hour traffic…
The gentleman ahead of me pulled into one lane, and I pulled into the opposite lane to order. Even though he was first in line, my order was taken ahead of his, and I ended up receiving my lunch order first. Now that wasn’t suppose to happen, I thought to myself. I felt that God was telling me to be polite, apologize for the accidental mishap, make someone’s day a little brighter and share a blessing with someone I didn’t even know. So, I paid for his order and pulled into the #1 spot to wait for my order to be completed. I heard a honk while the man was passing by, waving his left hand out his window and mouthing a sincere “thank you” with a smile on his face.
And that small mishap today, I turned into a blessing for someone else – which lead me to the topic that I wanted to share with you…paying it forward and finding a stranger and making a new friend to share God’s blessings with. God has blessed us all in some way or another. Why not share His blessings with someone else, right?
What does the Bible say about helping others in need or just simply sharing God’s blessings with them, putting a smile on their faces and letting them know how much God loves them?
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ …
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.
Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.
We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
What are some ways to selflessly pay it forward and help others?
There are many ways to show sincere concern for the well-being of others in this world. Here are just a few simple ideas…
1. Hold the door for someone behind you.
2. Pay for someone’s meal at a restaurant.
3. Smile at a stranger, introduce yourself, make a new friend, brighten their day.
4. Donate blood or volunteer at a homeless shelter, nursing home, hospital, animal shelter.
5. Share your umbrella with a stranger on a rainy day.
6. Let someone with only a few items cut in front of you at the grocery store.
7. Become a mentor to someone in need.
8. Leave encouraging post-it notes in library books or other random places.
9. Give a compliment to someone.
10. When someone wants to repay you for something, ask them to pay it forward and share God’s blessings with someone else.
Have you done any of these kind gestures lately? What are some things you would enjoy doing to bless others? God tells us to love others, to help others in need, and to put others before ourselves.
Give it a try, and brighten someone’s day. God will turn around and send the blessings right back in your direction. 🙂
