Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
As the Israelites traveled, whenever they would encounter danger, shortages or inconveniences, they would complain to Moses and longed to be back in Egypt, where they found life to be easier. God heard the grumbling of the Israelites when there was a shortage of food, and He provided manna for them in the desert. Once again, the Israelites complained about needing water to drink. God told Moses to take his staff and strike a rock at Horeb, and water began to flow. The Amalekites attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Joshua had fought the Amalekites, as Moses had ordered. Aaron and Hur stood by Moses’ side and even held up his arms to ensure victory against the Amalekites. Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, visited him, for he had heard of everything God had done for Moses and the Israelites.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
Difficult circumstances in life can cause great stress; complaining is a natural response. When pressure comes our way, we need to avoid the temptation of a quick escape and running from our problems. Instead, we can focus on God’s power and wisdom to help us deal with the causes of our stresses in life. Take the time to pray with God instead of complaining, for complaining will only raise the level of stress in our lives. We can learn to fully trust God by following Him, and we can learn to obey Him by taking small steps of obedience. In the busyness of life, it is so easy to let other responsibilities crowd our schedules. We should take time with God each day, carefully guarding our time with Him. Just like Aaron and Hur were by Moses’ side while the fight between the Israelites and the Amalekites was going on, we, too, should be there for our spiritual leaders, whether it is offering a word of encouragement or praying for them. We should always look for opportunities to tell others about God and what He is doing in our lives.
Prayer: What can we pray for in regards to these passages?
Heavenly Father, we are imperfect people. Help us to deal with difficult circumstances and stresses in our lives with first starting off by praying and asking for Your help instead of complaining. We trust you, God. Please guide us and help us on our journey in life. Help us to obey You. Please help us to guard our time with You, for we know that You are the most important thing in life. We lift up our spiritual leaders, and we pray for them as they teach Your Word to people around the world. Help us, as well, to look for opportunities to talk with others about You and share what You are doing in each of our lives. We give all of our worries and fears up to You, Father. Please take our burdens, and forgive us for the many sins that we have committed. We love You and thank You – in Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
