Observation: What was going on in the Bible at this time?
In Exodus 22, the laws from God, that the Israelites are to follow, continue, laws of justice and mercy. The Israelites were told to celebrate three festivals every year, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering, where the people would appear before the Lord. God was sending an angel ahead of His people to guard them and bring them to the place that God had prepared for them. The Lord told Moses to approach Him alone, and Moses told the people everything the Lord had said; Moses wrote down everything God had said. The Israelites said they would do whatever God wanted them to do. The Lord told Moses to go up on Mount Sinai, where He would give Moses the tablets of stone.
Application: How can we apply this to our lives?
God gave these laws to the Israelites in order to protect the nation, organize the nation and to focus the nation’s attention on Him. We must all obey God. Life becomes much easier when we follow the path that God wants for our lives and strive to obey Him at all times. By reading the different laws that were in place from God to His people, we can learn many things. God warned the Israelites not to treat aliens unfairly. We, too, can be sensitive to the strangers, refugees, and immigrants from other countries by expressing God’s love by our kindness and generosity. We all know what it feels like to be in a new environment where we feel out of place and alone. We should always help the less fortunate. When we apply God’s laws of fairness and kindness to our enemies, we show how different we are from the rest of the world. Reach out to those in need, even our enemies. Follow along in Exodus 22-24, where there are many more important pieces of advice from God and how He wants us to live our lives.
